The Balkans refers to the southeastern European peninsula bordered by the Adriatic, Ionian, Aegean, and Black Seas. The region includes Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania (and sometimes Moldova and Turkey's European portion). Many of these countries emerged from the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, making the Balkans one of the most recently reshaped political maps in Europe.
