Mexico is officially known as the United Mexican States (Estados Unidos Mexicanos) and is organized as a federation of 31 free and sovereign states plus one federal entity (Mexico City). The country covers approximately 1.97 million square kilometers, making it the 13th largest country in the world and the third-largest in Latin America. Mexico's states vary enormously in size - Chihuahua in the north is the largest, nearly the size of the United Kingdom, while Tlaxcala in central Mexico is the smallest.
