Carthage (in modern Tunisia) was Rome's greatest rival. The Arab conquest of the 7th century brought Islam and the Arabic language across the region. The Sahara is not entirely lifeless - It contains oases, dry riverbeds (wadis), and underground water reserves that have sustained trade routes and nomadic populations for millennia.
