The thirteen original colonies were British settlements along the eastern coast of North America that declared independence in 1776 to form the United States. They were established between 1607 (Virginia) and 1732 (Georgia) over a period of 125 years. Each colony had its own government, economy, and character - From the Puritan communities of New England to the tobacco plantations of Virginia and the diverse port cities of the Middle Colonies.

From Colonies to States

The colonists' growing frustration with British taxation and lack of representation - "no taxation without representation" - Culminated in the American Revolution. The Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776, was signed primarily by representatives of these 13 colonies. After winning the Revolution with French assistance, the colonies ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1788, officially becoming the first states of the new nation. The order in which states ratified the Constitution is still commemorated - Delaware was first and is nicknamed "The First State."
