Africa is the world's second-largest continent, covering about 30.3 million square kilometers and home to over 1.4 billion people. It contains 54 recognized countries, more than any other continent. Africa's geography is extraordinarily diverse, featuring the world's largest hot desert (the Sahara), the longest river (the Nile), the world's largest tropical rainforest outside the Amazon (the Congo Basin), and some of the highest mountains on Earth, including Kilimanjaro.

Africa's Geographic Diversity

Africa can be divided into several distinct regions. North Africa, separated from sub-Saharan Africa by the Sahara Desert, includes Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco - Countries with close cultural ties to the Arab world. West Africa includes Nigeria (Africa's most populous nation), Ghana, and Senegal. East Africa is home to Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Rwanda. Southern Africa features South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. Central Africa includes the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the continent's second-largest country by area. The island nation of Madagascar, off the eastern coast, has unique wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.
