Ancient Egypt: Land of Pharaohs and Pyramids

Ancient Egypt was one of the world's earliest and longest-lasting civilizations, flourishing along the Nile River from approximately 3100 BCE (when Upper and Lower Egypt were unified under Pharaoh Narmer) to 30 BCE (when Cleopatra VII died and Egypt became a Roman province). This spans over 3,000 years - Making it one of the most enduring civilizations in human history. The Nile River was the lifeblood of Egyptian civilization, providing annual flooding that fertilized the surrounding farmland in an otherwise desert landscape.

The ancient Egyptians built some of the most impressive monuments in human history. The Great Pyramid of Giza, built for Pharaoh Khufu around 2560 BCE, was the tallest man-made structure on Earth for over 3,800 years until the construction of Lincoln Cathedral in England around 1311 CE. The Sphinx, the Valley of the Kings, and Karnak Temple are among the other most famous ancient monuments. The Egyptians developed one of the world's earliest writing systems - Hieroglyphics - Which was deciphered in 1822 by Jean-François Champollion using the Rosetta Stone. Egyptian religion was polytheistic, with a vast pantheon of gods: Ra was the sun god and king of the gods; Osiris ruled the underworld; Isis was the goddess of magic and healing; Anubis was the jackal-headed god of death and embalming; and Horus, the falcon-headed god, was the patron of pharaohs. The pharaoh was considered a divine ruler - A living god on Earth. Mummification, the elaborate process of preserving the dead, reflects the Egyptians' profound belief in the afterlife.
