Journey back to ancient Greece! Test your knowledge of Greek history, philosophy, mythology, and culture.
Ancient Greece was a civilization that flourished from around 800 BCE to 146 BCE and laid the foundations for Western civilization. The Greeks made extraordinary contributions to philosophy, science, mathematics, art, literature, and politics. The city-state (polis) was the basic political unit, with Athens and Sparta being the most powerful and influential. Athenian democracy, developed in the 5th century BCE, became the model for modern democratic governments.
Ancient Greece produced some of history's greatest thinkers. Socrates pioneered a method of questioning (the Socratic method) that underlies modern critical thinking. His student Plato founded the Academy, the first institution of higher learning. Plato's student Aristotle wrote foundational works in logic, biology, ethics, and politics. In science, Archimedes calculated the value of pi, Pythagoras developed his famous theorem, and Euclid established the principles of geometry. Hippocrates is considered the father of medicine. This period also gave us the Olympic Games, Greek tragedy, and the Iliad and Odyssey of Homer.
