The Arabic alphabet is one of the world's most widely used writing systems, serving as the script for Arabic (spoken by over 420 million people) and adapted for Persian/Farsi, Urdu, Pashto, Kurdish, and other languages. Arabic script is written from right to left and consists of 28 letters, all of which are consonants - The script is an "abjad," meaning vowels are generally not written in everyday text (though they can be indicated by diacritical marks called harakat). The Arabic alphabet developed from the Nabataean script in the 4th - 5th centuries CE and shares roots with the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Phoenician alphabets.

Learning the Arabic Alphabet

Each of the 28 Arabic letters has four possible forms depending on its position in a word: initial (beginning), medial (middle), final (end), or isolated. Most letters connect to adjacent letters in a word, making Arabic cursive by nature. Six letters only connect to the preceding letter (not the following one), creating natural breaks in words. The letters Alif (ا), Ba (ب), Ta (ت), and Tha (ث) share similar shapes but differ by the number and position of dots below or above them. Arabic letters represent consonants, and short vowel sounds are typically understood from context by proficient readers.

Arabic is written in a flowing cursive style that varies significantly between formal (Modern Standard Arabic) and regional dialects. The Arabic script is considered calligraphically beautiful and has been elevated to a high art form in Islamic culture - Arabic calligraphy appears in mosques, manuscripts, and decorative art throughout the Islamic world. Learning to read Arabic requires not only memorizing the 28 letter forms but also their contextual variations. The Quran, Islam's holy book, is written in Classical Arabic and is one of the reasons Arabic literacy remains widespread.
