Boxing is one of the world's oldest sports, with roots in ancient Greece where it was included in the Olympic Games in 688 BCE. Modern boxing developed in England in the 18th century, with standardized rules established by the Marquess of Queensberry in 1867 (including the requirement to use gloves and rounds of three minutes each). Professional boxing features multiple world championship belts across different weight classes, organized by bodies including the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO.

Legends of the Ring

Boxing has produced some of sports history's most iconic figures. Muhammad Ali is widely considered the greatest boxer of all time - A three-time world heavyweight champion renowned for his speed, footwork, and personality as much as his punching power. His fights against Joe Frazier (Thrilla in Manila), George Foreman (Rumble in the Jungle), and Sonny Liston are legendary. Sugar Ray Robinson is considered by many boxing historians as the greatest pound-for-pound boxer ever. Mike Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in history at age 20 and was one of the most feared fighters of the 1980s. Modern era champions include Floyd Mayweather Jr. (50-0 record), Manny Pacquiao, and Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez.

Weight Classes and Title Belts

Professional boxing is divided into seventeen weight classes, from minimumweight (105 lb / 47.6 kg) up to heavyweight (over 200 lb / 90.7 kg). Each class has its own champions sanctioned by the four major bodies - The WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO - And an "undisputed" champion is a fighter who simultaneously holds all four belts. The heavyweight division has produced the sport's biggest cultural figures, from Ali and Tyson to Lennox Lewis, the Klitschko brothers, and Tyson Fury, while the welterweight class (147 lb) has been home to some of the most technical practitioners ever, including Sugar Ray Leonard, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Manny Pacquiao.

The Sport Today

Modern boxing has shifted heavily toward pay-per-view megafights and crossover events with mixed martial arts and influencer boxing, but the traditional fight calendar still revolves around championship nights at venues such as the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Madison Square Garden in New York, and Wembley Stadium in London. Saturday-night title fights regularly draw millions of viewers worldwide, and unified champions like Oleksandr Usyk, Naoya Inoue, and Canelo Álvarez are among the highest-paid athletes on the planet.
