Chess is one of the world's oldest and most widely played strategy board games. It originated in India around the 6th century CE as 'chaturanga,' spread to Persia as 'shatranj,' and reached Europe through the Moorish conquest of Spain. Modern chess rules were largely standardized by the 15th century. Today, chess is played by millions worldwide, governed by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE), and has professional players who earn their livelihood from the game. The title of Grandmaster (GM) is the highest FIDE title, awarded to players who achieve exceptional tournament results.

The Legendary World Champions

Chess has produced some of the most celebrated intellects in sports history. Wilhelm Steinitz became the first official World Champion in 1886. Bobby Fischer's 1972 match against Boris Spassky during the Cold War became a global media event. Garry Kasparov dominated chess for two decades and is widely considered the greatest chess player of all time. Kasparov's famous 1997 defeat to IBM's Deep Blue computer raised profound questions about human versus artificial intelligence. Magnus Carlsen of Norway is the current dominant player, having held the World Championship title from 2013. The rise of computer engines has transformed chess analysis and training, while online platforms like Chess.com have brought the game to tens of millions of new players.
