Cocktails are mixed alcoholic beverages that combine spirits, juices, syrups, bitters, and other ingredients. The word 'cocktail' was first defined in print in 1806 as 'a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters.' Cocktail culture experienced a golden age in the early 20th century, with American bartenders creating hundreds of classic recipes before Prohibition (1920-1933) drove many to work abroad. The craft cocktail revival of the early 21st century brought renewed interest in classic recipes and premium ingredients.

Classic Cocktails and Their Origins

Many classic cocktails have fascinating histories. The Martini (gin and vermouth, garnished with an olive or lemon twist) became the quintessential sophisticated cocktail of the 20th century. The Old Fashioned (whiskey, bitters, sugar, orange peel) is one of the oldest cocktail recipes. The Manhattan (whiskey, sweet vermouth, bitters) originated in New York in the 1870s. The Margarita (tequila, lime juice, triple sec) is the most popular cocktail in the United States. The Mojito (rum, mint, lime, sugar, soda water) originated in Cuba. James Bond's preference for a 'vodka martini, shaken not stirred' helped popularize vodka in the 1960s.
