Test your Cold War knowledge! The geopolitical struggle between the US and USSR that shaped the second half of the 20th century.
The Cold War was a period of geopolitical tension between the United States and the Soviet Union that lasted from approximately 1947 to 1991. The term 'cold' war was used because the two superpowers never directly fought each other militarily - Instead competing through proxy wars, arms races, space exploration, propaganda, and political influence. The division of the world into Western (capitalist) and Eastern (communist) blocs affected virtually every country on Earth and defined international relations for nearly half a century.
The Cold War produced numerous defining moments. The Berlin Blockade (1948-1949) was the first major confrontation. The Korean War (1950-1953) was the first major proxy conflict. The Sputnik launch (1957) and the Space Race accelerated. The Cuban Missile Crisis (October 1962) brought the world closest to nuclear war. The Vietnam War (1955-1975) became America's most controversial Cold War conflict. The Nixon-era détente reduced tensions. Reagan's military buildup and support for anti-communist movements renewed tensions. Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms (glasnost and perestroika), the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989), and the dissolution of the Soviet Union (1991) ended the Cold War and reshaped the world order.
