Test your knowledge of constellations! From Orion to the Big Dipper - How well do you know the night sky?
Constellations are patterns of stars visible in the night sky that human cultures throughout history have connected into recognizable shapes, often associated with mythological figures, animals, or objects. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially recognizes 88 constellations that divide the entire celestial sphere. These 88 constellations include ancient Greek and Roman patterns, as well as more recently named southern hemisphere constellations added during the Age of Exploration.
Constellations have guided navigation, marked the seasons, and inspired mythology for thousands of years. Orion (the Hunter) is one of the most recognizable winter constellations, featuring the distinctive three-star belt. Ursa Major contains the Big Dipper, whose pointer stars always indicate the direction of Polaris (the North Star) - Invaluable for navigation. The zodiac constellations (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpius, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces) lie along the ecliptic - The apparent path of the Sun through the sky over the year. Southern hemisphere observers can see the Southern Cross (Crux), which appears on the flags of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Brazil, and Samoa.
