Test your knowledge of the world's continents and oceans - Sizes, populations, and key facts!
The Earth's surface is divided into seven continents and five major oceans, providing the basic geographic framework within which all of human civilization and natural life exists. Understanding the continents and oceans - Their sizes, locations, characteristics, and the relationships between them - Is foundational geographic knowledge that underpins everything from climate science to economics to geopolitics. This quiz tests your knowledge of these fundamental geographic features.
The seven continents are Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia (also called Oceania). Asia is the largest continent by both area and population, covering over 44 million square kilometers and home to over 4.5 billion people. Africa is the second-largest by area and by population. Antarctica, the southernmost continent, is the only continent with no permanent human population - It's home only to scientific research stations. Europe is the second-smallest by area but has been historically dominant in global affairs. Try our geography quiz for more world geography content!
The five major oceans are the Pacific (the world's largest), the Atlantic, the Indian, the Southern (also called the Antarctic Ocean), and the Arctic. The Pacific Ocean alone covers more than 30% of the Earth's surface and is larger than all of Earth's land area combined. The oceans play a critical role in regulating Earth's climate, supporting biodiversity, enabling global trade, and providing food for billions of people. The boundaries between oceans are somewhat arbitrary - They are all connected as one global ocean - But the divisions are useful for geographic and scientific purposes.
