The Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 delegates to the Continental Congress. Its famous opening includes one of the most celebrated sentences in political history: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." The primary author, Thomas Jefferson, later became the third President of the United States.
