Test your English grammar knowledge! Punctuation, sentence structure, parts of speech, and common errors.
Grammar is the set of structural rules governing the composition of sentences, phrases, and words in any given natural language. English grammar includes rules about parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections), sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, and agreement between subjects and verbs. Good grammar is fundamental to clear communication and is essential for academic writing, professional communication, and effective expression.
English grammar has several commonly confused areas. The distinction between 'affect' (usually a verb meaning to influence) and 'effect' (usually a noun meaning a result) trips up even experienced writers. 'Their,' 'there,' and 'they're' are homophones with distinct meanings. Apostrophes signal possession ('the dog's bone') or contractions ('don't') but are never used to form plurals. Subject-verb agreement requires that verbs match their subjects in number - 'The team is playing' (singular) vs. 'The teams are playing' (plural). Dangling modifiers, split infinitives, run-on sentences, and comma splices are among the most frequent errors in English writing.
