Super Mario is Nintendo's flagship franchise and one of the most recognizable characters in video game history. Mario first appeared as "Jumpman" in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong before starring in Mario Bros. (1983) and the landmark Super Mario Bros. (1985) on the NES. That game alone sold over 40 million copies and helped revive the North American video game industry after the great crash of 1983. The Mario Kart series, beginning in 1992, has become one of gaming's most beloved multiplayer franchises. Super Smash Bros., a crossover fighting game featuring Mario, Pikachu, Link, and dozens of other Nintendo characters, is one of the best-selling fighting game series ever. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) became the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time. Animation and gaming have increasingly converged, with major game franchises generating film and television adaptations.
