Minecraft: The World's Best-Selling Game

Minecraft is a sandbox video game developed by Swedish programmer Markus "Notch" Persson and later purchased by Microsoft for $2.5 billion in 2014. First publicly released in 2009 as an alpha version, Minecraft officially launched in November 2011. It has since sold over 238 million copies across all platforms, making it the best-selling video game of all time. The game's simple visual style - A world made entirely of 1-meter cubic blocks - Belies extraordinary depth and creativity.

Minecraft has three primary game modes: Survival (gather resources, build shelter, fight mobs, and eventually defeat the Ender Dragon); Creative (unlimited resources, no health, build anything); and Hardcore (like Survival but with only one life and the world is deleted upon death). The game features a huge variety of biomes (forests, deserts, oceans, mountains, jungles), complex crafting recipes, and resource gathering through mining and farming. Try the Animal Crossing Quiz for another creative sandbox game, or take on the Video Game Quiz for broader gaming history.

Minecraft's "End" dimension contains the game's final boss - The Ender Dragon. The Nether dimension is a dangerous hellscape filled with unique resources, mobs, and the dangerous Nether fortress. The game also includes the procedurally generated world with no fixed map boundaries, though the "Far Lands" bug (now removed) once created bizarre terrain at the extreme edges of older world generation. Minecraft has been used extensively in education through the "Minecraft: Education Edition" version, teaching subjects from history to coding to environmental science.
