Test your NHL knowledge - Hockey rules, legendary players, the Stanley Cup, and the history of professional hockey.
The National Hockey League (NHL) is the premier professional ice hockey league in the world, consisting of 32 teams across the United States and Canada. Founded in 1917, the NHL is the third oldest major professional sports league in North America. Hockey is a uniquely Canadian sport - The rules of modern hockey were largely codified in Montreal in the 1870s - Though the game is now enormously popular across North America, Eastern Europe (especially Russia, Czech Republic, and Sweden), and Scandinavia.
The Stanley Cup - Awarded to the NHL champion each year - Is the oldest professional sports trophy in North America, donated by the Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley of Preston, in 1892. It predates the NHL itself. The trophy has a unique tradition: each member of the championship team gets to spend a day with the Cup and do whatever they want with it, leading to famous photographs of players bringing it to unusual places. Wayne Gretzky - "The Great One" - Is the most famous player in NHL history and arguably the greatest athlete in any professional sport relative to his peers. He scored 894 career goals (a record) and 1,963 career assists - Giving him more assists than the second-leading scorer has total points. He won four Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers and nine Hart Trophies (league MVP). Other legends include Gordie Howe, Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr, and in the modern era, Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin. As of 2023, Ovechkin surpassed Gretzky's career goal record with 895 goals.
