Words Matter: Building Your Vocabulary

Vocabulary - The collection of words you know and can use - Is one of the strongest predictors of educational and professional success. Research by E.D. Hirsch and others has demonstrated that vocabulary knowledge is closely linked to reading comprehension: if you encounter too many unfamiliar words, comprehension breaks down entirely. The average English speaker uses about 20,000 - 35,000 words actively in speech and writing, while the passive vocabulary (words recognized but not actively used) may be twice as large.

The English language has an exceptionally large vocabulary - Over 600,000 words in the Oxford English Dictionary. Many vocabulary words come from Latin and Greek roots, which makes understanding these roots a powerful strategy for decoding unfamiliar words. The prefix "anti-" (against) appears in "antibiotic," "antipathy," "antitoxin"; "philo-" (love of) gives us "philosophy," "philharmonic," "Anglophile." Building vocabulary through reading, studying roots and prefixes, and using new words in context is more effective than memorizing lists. Try the English Language Quiz or test grammar specifically with the Grammar Quiz.

Words often carry connotations beyond their literal (denotative) meaning. "Home" and "house" have similar denotations but different connotations - "home" implies warmth and belonging while "house" is more neutral. "Thrifty" and "miserly" both describe someone careful with money, but "thrifty" carries positive connotations while "miserly" is pejorative. Understanding connotation is crucial for precise, effective communication and for appreciating the nuances of literature and persuasive writing.
