World War I (1914 - 1918), also known as the Great War, was one of the deadliest and most destructive conflicts in human history. What began as a regional conflict in the Balkans - Sparked by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914 - Rapidly escalated through a web of alliances into a global war that consumed Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and beyond. By the time it ended with the Armistice on November 11, 1918, the war had killed approximately 20 million people and wounded another 21 million.

Causes, Alliances, and the Western Front

Historians often cite four main causes of World War I using the acronym MAIN: Militarism (the build-up of military forces across Europe), Alliances (the network of treaties that pulled nations into the conflict), Imperialism (competition for colonies and global influence), and Nationalism (particularly in the Balkans, where ethnic groups sought independence from empires). The war was fought primarily between the Allied Powers (France, Britain, Russia, and later the United States) and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria). The Western Front in France and Belgium became notorious for its brutal trench warfare, where armies gained and lost territory measured in yards for months at a time. World War I fundamentally reshaped the world. The defeat of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire led to the dissolution of four empires and the redrawing of the map of Europe and the Middle East. The harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles (1919) planted seeds of resentment in Germany that would contribute to the rise of Adolf Hitler and the outbreak of World War II just two decades later. The war also marked the first widespread use of chemical weapons, tanks, airplanes as weapons of war, and submarine warfare. Its legacy continues to shape world politics, borders, and cultures to this day. Try our American history quiz for more historical content!
