Europe's 44 countries have capitals ranging from mega-cities like London, Paris, Berlin, and Moscow to tiny city-states like Vaduz (Liechtenstein, population ~5,000) and San Marino. Many European capitals are also the country's largest city and historic center, but there are exceptions - Bern is Switzerland's capital rather than Zurich or Geneva; The Hague hosts the Dutch government while Amsterdam is the official capital; and Bonn was West Germany's capital until reunification, when Berlin was restored as the German capital in 1990.

Surprising European Capitals

Nicosia (Cyprus) is the world's last divided capital, split between the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus along the Green Line. Valletta (Malta) is the smallest national capital in the EU by area. Reykjavik (Iceland) is the northernmost national capital of a sovereign state. Minsk (Belarus) was almost entirely destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in Stalinist architecture.
