The Story and Its Characters

The story is based on a French fairy tale ("La Belle et la Bête") first published in 1740 and remains one of the most widely adapted stories in the world, appearing in countless film and stage versions across different cultures. The Disney version features a remarkable cast of enchanted characters: Lumière the charming French candelabrum, Cogsworth the fussy clock, Mrs. Potts the warm teapot, Chip her son the teacup, and Wardrobe the opera singer. The film's music by Alan Menken (music) and Howard Ashman (lyrics) is extraordinary. "Belle," "Gaston," "Be Our Guest," and the title track "Beauty and the Beast" (performed by Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Potts) are all considered among the greatest songs in animated film history. Howard Ashman, who died of AIDS just months before the film was released, was credited as the co-author of the lyrics and his creative partnership with Menken defined the Disney Renaissance.
