Black history encompasses the rich, complex, and often painful history of people of African descent, from ancient African civilizations through the transatlantic slave trade, emancipation, Reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, the Civil Rights Movement, and into the present. Black History Month is celebrated each February in the United States and Canada, and in October in the United Kingdom and Ireland, to recognize and honor the contributions of Black Americans and people of African descent throughout history.

Pioneers and Trailblazers

Black history is filled with extraordinary individuals who overcame tremendous odds. Harriet Tubman escaped slavery and led hundreds of others to freedom through the Underground Railroad. Frederick Douglass became one of America's greatest orators and abolitionist writers. Booker T. Washington founded Tuskegee Institute. W.E.B. Du Bois co-founded the NAACP. Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and others sparked the Harlem Renaissance. Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. led the Civil Rights Movement. Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first major-party Black presidential candidate. Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States in 2009.
