Test your knowledge of world capital cities! From obvious to surprising - How well do you know where countries put their capitals?
A capital city is the seat of a country's government and often the center of its political, economic, and cultural life - Though not always. Several countries have multiple capitals or capitals that aren't their largest cities. Australia's capital Canberra, for example, was specifically created to settle a rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne. South Africa has three capitals: Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative), and Bloemfontein (judicial). Brazil moved its capital from Rio de Janeiro to the purpose-built Brasília in 1960.
Many people assume a country's capital is also its largest city, but this is often wrong. The United States capital, Washington D.C., is not even in the top 10 most populous U.S. cities. Canada's capital Ottawa ranks behind Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary in population. New Zealand's capital Wellington is smaller than Auckland. Myanmar relocated its capital from Yangon to the newly built Naypyidaw in 2005. Kazakhstan moved its capital from Almaty to the newly built Astana (now Nur-Sultan) in 1997. These decisions often reflect political, geographic, or strategic considerations rather than population size.
