The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Harry Potter is one of the most beloved literary and film franchises in history, created by British author J.K. Rowling. The seven-book series follows orphan Harry Potter from his 11th birthday, when he learns he is a wizard, through his seven years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The first book, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," was published in 1997 and became an instant sensation, spawning a global phenomenon.

Hogwarts School is divided into four houses: Gryffindor (brave and bold), Hufflepuff (loyal and hardworking), Ravenclaw (intelligent and curious), and Slytherin (ambitious and cunning). Harry, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley are sorted into Gryffindor. The school's headmaster for most of the series is Albus Dumbledore, considered the greatest wizard of his age. The primary antagonist is Lord Voldemort (Tom Marvolo Riddle), whose name is so feared that most wizards refer to him only as "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named." The eight-film series (2001 - 2011) starring Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter grossed over $7.7 billion at the worldwide box office, making it one of the highest-grossing film series ever. The franchise expanded with the "Fantastic Beasts" prequel series, set in the 1920s - 1940s, exploring the wizarding world before Harry's time. Theme parks, merchandise, and stage productions have made Harry Potter one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time.
