The Mario Character Roster

The core Mario cast is deeply familiar to generations of gamers. Princess Peach Toadstool rules the Mushroom Kingdom and is frequently kidnapped by Bowser, the King of the Koopas. Bowser, also known as King Koopa, is the franchise's primary villain - A giant, fire-breathing turtle-dragon whose army of Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Piranha Plants, and Hammer Bros. serve his conquest. Luigi, Mario's taller, thinner, and often more cowardly brother, has starred in his own spinoff series (Luigi's Mansion). Yoshi, the friendly green dinosaur who serves as Mario's mount, debuted in Super Mario World (1990). Princess Daisy is a ruler of Sarasaland who frequently appears in sports and party games.

The Mario RPG series introduced beloved characters including Geno (a star warrior), Mallow, Paper Mario's Goombella, and Fawful. The "Babies" versions (Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach) appear frequently in kart racing and sports titles. Wario, Mario's greedy nemesis/cousin, and Waluigi, Luigi's rival, appear in party and sports games. Rosalina, introduced in Super Mario Galaxy (2007), is a space guardian who watches over the Lumas. Pauline, the original damsel-in-distress from Donkey Kong, returned in Super Mario Odyssey (2017) as the mayor of New Donk City.
