Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars was released in 1996 for the Super Nintendo, developed by Square (now Square Enix) in collaboration with Nintendo. It was a groundbreaking title that blended the Mario universe with traditional Japanese RPG mechanics - Turn-based combat, character leveling, equipment, and a party system - While retaining Mario's signature charm and humor. The Mario RPG Series

After Super Mario RPG, Nintendo developed its own RPG branch with the Paper Mario series (Nintendo 64, 2000) and the Mario & Luigi series (Game Boy Advance, 2003). Paper Mario became known for its turn-based combat with timed button presses that add extra damage or dodge, its paper aesthetic (all characters are flat), and its humor. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (2004, GameCube) is widely regarded as one of the greatest Mario games ever made. The Mario & Luigi series featured simultaneous control of both brothers in real-time battle sequences with excellent comedy writing. Super Mario RPG received a faithful remake for Nintendo Switch in 2023.
