NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) is America's most popular domestic motorsport, founded by Bill France Sr. in 1948 in Daytona Beach, Florida. What began as stock car racing on beach courses evolved into a massive entertainment spectacle with purpose-built superspeedways, massive corporate sponsorships, and a devoted fan base. The Daytona 500, run each February at Daytona International Speedway, is NASCAR's most prestigious race - Often called "the Great American Race."

NASCAR's Greatest Drivers and Races

Richard Petty, "The King," won 200 races and seven championships - Records that have never been approached. Dale Earnhardt Sr., "The Intimidator," was a seven-time champion beloved for his aggressive driving until his death at the 2001 Daytona 500 on the final lap. Jeff Gordon won four championships in the 1990s and 2000s and helped transform NASCAR into a mainstream American sport. Jimmie Johnson won an unprecedented seven championships (tied with Petty and Earnhardt), six of them consecutively (2006-2010). American sports like NASCAR, football, and baseball have passionate regional fan bases and deep cultural significance.

NASCAR's top series is the Cup Series, followed by the Xfinity Series and the Truck Series. Modern NASCAR Cup cars race at tracks ranging from short ovals (less than 1 mile) to superspeedways (2+ miles) to road courses. The Daytona 500 is traditionally the season opener in February. The "Playoffs" (formerly the Chase for the Cup) determine the championship through an elimination format in the season's final 10 races. Professional sports leagues all use playoff formats to determine champions, though NASCAR's format is unique.
