The modern Olympic Games were revived in Athens, Greece in 1896, after a hiatus of nearly 1,500 years since the ancient Greek Olympics. Since then, the Summer Olympics have been held 29 times, and the Winter Olympics (first held in Chamonix, France in 1924) have been held 24 times. The Games have been hosted on every inhabited continent except Africa, though several African cities have bid to host future Games.

Notable Olympic Host Cities

Some cities have hosted the Games multiple times: London (1908, 1948, 2012), Paris (1900, 1924, 2024), Athens (1896, 2004), Los Angeles (1932, 1984, 2028), and Tokyo (1964, 2020/21). The highest-altitude Summer Olympics were held in Mexico City in 1968. The most politically significant were the Moscow 1980 Games (boycotted by the US) and the Los Angeles 1984 Games (boycotted by the USSR). The Beijing 2008 Summer and 2022 Winter Games made China the only country to host both Summer and Winter Olympics.
