Studio Ghibli is Japan's most celebrated animation studio, founded in 1985 by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, along with producer Toshio Suzuki. The studio is renowned for hand-drawn animated films with rich environmental detail, complex female protagonists, nuanced moral storytelling, and a distinctly Japanese aesthetic that blends folklore, fantasy, and environmentalism. Ghibli films have won international acclaim and are studied in film schools worldwide.

Ghibli's Greatest Films

Spirited Away (2001), directed by Hayao Miyazaki, became the first anime film to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and the highest-grossing film in Japanese history. My Neighbor Totoro (1988) introduced the iconic Totoro character, which has become Ghibli's mascot. Princess Mononoke (1997) explored the conflict between industrialization and nature. Howl's Moving Castle (2004), Castle in the Sky (1986), Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), and Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) are other beloved classics. Animated films from both Ghibli and Pixar demonstrate that the medium can achieve the same emotional depth as any live-action cinema.

Isao Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies (1988), a devastating anti-war film set during World War II, is often considered one of the most emotionally devastating films ever made. The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013) is Takahata's final film, a masterpiece of minimalist animation. The composer Joe Hisaishi has scored most Miyazaki films, creating some of the most beloved film scores in any language. Japanese culture has had an extraordinary global influence through anime, manga, gaming, and film that rivals any Western cultural export.
