The X-Men are a team of mutant superheroes in the Marvel Comics universe, created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby and first appearing in X-Men #1 in September 1963. The X-Men concept - Humans with genetic mutations that grant superhuman abilities - Was a powerful allegory for civil rights and the experience of marginalized groups in American society. The team is led by Professor Charles Xavier, whose dream of peaceful coexistence between mutants and humans stands in opposition to Magneto's militancy.

The X-Men and Their World

The original five X-Men were Cyclops (Scott Summers), Marvel Girl/Jean Grey, Beast (Hank McCoy), Iceman (Bobby Drake), and Angel (Warren Worthington III). The 1975 "All-New, All-Different X-Men" introduced the lineup that became most famous: Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Thunderbird, and Banshee, joining Cyclops. This lineup formed the basis for the acclaimed 1990s animated series and the Fox X-Men film franchise (2000-2019). Marvel Comics has produced some of the most culturally significant superhero narratives of the 20th century through titles like X-Men.

Wolverine (Logan) - With his adamantium claws, healing factor, and centuries of tortured history - Became Marvel's most popular character in the 1980s and 1990s. Hugh Jackman played Wolverine in the Fox films for 17 years (2000-2017), one of the longest-running superhero casting choices in cinema. Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) brought gravitas and complexity to the franchise's central philosophical debate. The MCU is now integrating mutants and the X-Men following Disney's acquisition of Fox. The Marvel Cinematic Universe will eventually incorporate the X-Men into its interconnected universe.
