Test your knowledge of Legend of Zelda characters - Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, and the rich cast of Hyrule.
The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo's most celebrated franchises, featuring a rich mythology and cast of characters spread across 19 mainline games set in the land of Hyrule (and related realms). The franchise began in 1986 with the original The Legend of Zelda for the NES, created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka. The series follows Link - A young hero - Who must battle the evil Ganon/Ganondorf to rescue Princess Zelda and protect the Triforce, a sacred relic of divine power. Despite the name of the franchise, the player character is Link, not Zelda, a fact that surprises some new fans.
The franchise is defined by its three central figures: Link (the hero, represents the Triforce of Courage), Princess Zelda (the princess and sage, represents the Triforce of Wisdom), and Ganondorf/Ganon (the villain, a Gerudo king who desires the Triforce of Power). The Triforce is a golden triangle artifact left by the three Golden Goddesses - Din, Nayru, and Farore - When they created Hyrule. The series features an eternal cycle of reincarnation: the same heroic soul (Link), the same princess spirit (Zelda), and the same evil (Ganondorf) are reborn across time. This explains why different Zelda games have different Links and Zeldas - They are different incarnations of the same spirits.
Beyond the central trio, the Zelda franchise features beloved supporting characters: Impa (Zelda's loyal Sheikah guardian and nursemaid), Epona (Link's horse, first named in Ocarina of Time), Navi (the fairy companion who says "Hey, listen!"), Midna (the Twili princess from Twilight Princess), Urbosa (the Gerudo chief from Breath of the Wild), and many more. The Great Deku Tree serves as a mentor figure in multiple games. Ocarina of Time (1998) is frequently cited as one of the greatest video games ever made and introduced 3D Zelda gameplay. Breath of the Wild (2017) revolutionized open-world game design. Test your Zelda knowledge here - Also try our Nintendo quiz.
