Test your knowledge of Harry Potter spells - From Expelliarmus and Avada Kedavra to Wingardium Leviosa and Alohomora.
The magic system in the Harry Potter universe, created by J.K. Rowling, is one of the most beloved and detailed fictional magic systems in literature. Spells in Harry Potter are cast through wands using incantations (spoken or, for advanced wizards, unspoken), with the correct wand movement and intention being equally important. Spells draw on a mixture of Latin, pseudo-Latin, French, and invented words - "Expelliarmus" (to expel arms), "Lumos" (light, from Latin lux), "Nox" (darkness, Latin nox), and "Alohomora" (from West African Sidiki dialect "open up") demonstrate the linguistic variety.
Harry Potter spells are broadly categorized as: Charms (alter the properties of things or beings without transforming them - Wingardium Leviosa, Accio, Lumos), Transfiguration (change form or appearance), Hexes and Jinxes (minor and moderate dark magic), Curses (most severe and dangerous - The Unforgivable Curses are the most extreme), and Counter-Spells (negate the effects of other spells). The three Unforgivable Curses are the Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra), the Cruciatus Curse (Crucio - Torture), and the Imperius Curse (Imperio - Mind control). Using any Unforgivable Curse is punishable by a life sentence in Azkaban.
Iconic Harry Potter spells have entered popular culture: "Expecto Patronum" (summoning a Patronus to repel Dementors) became a symbol of hope and light; "Riddikulus" defeats Boggarts by making them funny; "Obliviate" erases memories; "Accio" summons objects ("Accio Firebolt!"); "Expelliarmus" (Harry's signature spell) disarms opponents; and "Lumos" creates light from the wand tip. Hermione Granger correctly pronounces "Wingardium Leviosa" - Emphasizing "levi-O-sa not levio-SA!" - In one of the series' most quoted scenes.
